What to do if the licence holder dies

Please contact us as soon as possible if a TV Licence holder has died. You need to provide the name, address and TV Licence number (where possible) of the deceased person. We’ll then reply and advise if we need you to do anything else.

If the deceased had an over 75 TV Licence, please follow the instructions below.

If the licence holder was over 75

Contact us with the following details

Please provide the title, initial, last name, address and licence number (where possible) of the deceased person.

We will also need to know if anybody else is living at the property so that we can send a reminder to the correct person when the licence is due for renewal.

If anybody was living with the deceased licence holder

The over 75 TV Licence will continue to cover them until the TV Licence for that year runs out.

If any person who was living with the deceased licence holder is 74 years of age or over

That person needs to contact us giving their date of birth and National Insurance number.  They will be covered by the existing licence until it runs out, then we'll send them a reminder to apply for  a short-term TV Licence if they’re still 74, or a free over 75 TV Licence if they have turned 75.

If nobody was living with the licence holder

We’ll cancel the over 75 TV Licence. There’s no refund on an over 75 TV Licence, as it’s issued free of charge.
